Tonga Sand Strategy: A Resilient Construction Revolution

The Kingdom of Tonga faces a critical sand shortage with far-reaching impacts on national security, infrastructure development, and environmental protection. As a small island nation, Tonga is especially vulnerable to cyclones, king tides, and rising sea levels. Dependence on natural sand for construction is accelerating coastal erosion, land degradation, and endangering marine ecosystems and coastal communities. Tackling this challenge is vital to strengthening Tonga’s resilience and sustainability.

Objectives

The primary objective of the sand shortage project is to address the critical national security risk posed by the sand shortage in Tonga. This overarching goal is supported by specific objectives, including:

  • Promote Sustainable Sand Alternatives: Replace natural sand with Sland in the construction sector.
  • Strengthen Infrastructure: Build resilient structures and housing to withstand natural disasters.
  • Protect the Environment: Safeguard Tonga’s delicate ecosystems and support eco-tourism.
  • Empower Vulnerable Communities: Enhance resilience among Tonga’s most at-risk groups.
  • Encourage Regional Cooperation: Foster sustainable development and cooperation among Pacific islands.
