Banaba Rehabilitation (Kiribati)

From 1900 to 1979, Banaba Island has been mined for its rich phosphate—22 million tonnes extracted to nourish the world—enduring the ravages of WWII, displacement, and broken promises of return. Relocated to Rabi Island (Fiji) in 1945, the Banaban people, today, remain divided between two jurisdictions, torn between two homes, their identity fragmented and their dignity long oppressed. 2025 marks eight decades, of waiting for justice and fulfilment of a promise yet unkept.

RGPEL, in collaboration with Banaban community leaders from Banaba and Rabi, proposes a realistic pathway to finally rehabilitate Banaba Island and connect with Rabi Island.

Objectives

The rehabilitation of Banaba will be guided by phased projects to achieve lasting impact:

  • Community Consultations: Rebuild trust, belief, and confidence among the Banaban people.
  • Proposal and Design Development: Craft a vision and blueprint for Banaba’s restoration.
  • Funding and Organization: Establish a sustainable financial and organizational foundation.
  • Reconstruction Efforts: Rebuild Banaba, honoring its cultural and historical legacy.
  • Creation of a Sustainable Economy: Develop an economy to support Banaba’s future resilience both on Banaba and Rabi.
