Small-Scale Miners

Across the Province of West Papua, Papua New Guinea, and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, thousands of small-scale and alluvial miners work in extreme and dangerous conditions. They live in informal camps, face exploitation and unscrupulous gold traders, and have no pathway to secure housing or long-term livelihoods.

The Gold to Homes Initiative proposes to link fair trade gold with affordable, climate-resilient housing, including through the use of Sland-based blocks and construction materials.

Instead of leaving them to exploitative trading practices, we offer fair, transparent prices for their gold and a pathway to dignity: the option to channel part of their earnings into resilient, affordable housing for their families, using innovative materials such as Sland-based blocks. By linking gold, income, savings and safe homes, this initiative turns hardship mining into a foundation for stability, security and hope.
