The Carteret Homecoming Initiative (CHI) is a humanitarian and climate-resilience programme proposed to assist the peaceful and dignified resettlement of families displaced from the Carteret Islands to mainland Bougainville.

The project directly responds to one of the Pacific’s earliest cases of climate-induced displacement, where rising sea levels and salt-water intrusion have rendered the islands increasingly uninhabitable. It aims to create a new, climate-resilient homeland on 30 hectares of donated land in mainland Bougainville. This initiative will transform the challenge of relocation into an opportunity for renewal: constructing affordable, cyclone-resistant homes, establishing new livelihoods grounded in agro-forestry and eco-infrastructure, and honouring the Carteret heritage with community design that embraces both coastal roots and inland will-to-thrive. Together we will build a safe, dignified future for the Carteret families — a place where culture, community and climate resilience merge into hope.
